Neolith is produced in several thicknesses, each suited to different applications. For kitchen worktops, the two main choices are 12mm and 20mm. Neolith’s countertop technical manual also lists laminated combinations such as 6+6mm, where thinner layers are bonded to build up thickness. Thinner 3mm and 6mm formats are mainly used for furniture, wall cladding, flooring and facades.

The Case for 12mm

A 12mm Neolith worktop has a slim, refined profile that suits modern, minimalist and handleless kitchens. It is lighter, which can make installation easier. It also generally costs less than 20mm. When fully supported by the cabinets beneath, it is more than strong enough for everyday kitchen use.

The main limitations are overhangs and edge vulnerability. Unsupported overhangs are shorter than with 20mm, so breakfast bars may need brackets or supports. A slim edge also offers less material to absorb impacts, so an eased edge profile is worth considering.

The Case for 20mm

A 20mm worktop feels solid and substantial. It suits classic, shaker and transitional kitchens and gives more flexibility for islands with seating. Neolith’s technical data shows a breaking strength roughly three times that of 12mm. Its manual also allows longer unsupported overhangs.

It is heavier and generally costs more, both in material and fabrication time. Neolith’s 2024 silica free formulations were also launched first in 20mm, starting with Arctic White and Abu Dhabi White, which may influence your choice if silica content is a priority.

Creating a Thicker Look With Mitred Edges

If you want the appearance of a very thick worktop, such as 40mm or more, the edge can be built up by mitring a strip of Neolith to the front edge. This creates a bold, architectural look without the weight of a solid thick slab. Full Body designs work especially well for mitres because the colour and veining continue through the material.

Mitred edges require precise fabrication and add to the cost, so they are often reserved for islands and feature areas where they make the biggest visual impact.

12mm gives a sleek modern profile at a lower cost. 20mm offers extra strength, longer overhangs and a classic feel. Mitred edges let you create any look you want.

Support and Installation

Whatever the thickness, proper support is essential. Neolith’s manual recommends a continuous supporting surface over kitchen furniture for straight edged worktops and reinforcement around the perimeter for mitred edges. Joins need additional support and cut out corners must be radiused with a minimum radius of 3mm, never left at 90 degrees.

Furniture such as dining tables and coffee tables often uses thin Neolith bonded to a supporting base, which keeps the piece light enough to move while delivering the same heat and stain resistance as a worktop.
