Neolith is made in large slabs up to 3600mm long and 1600mm wide. Here is how each format fits a kitchen, how to plan joins and islands and what slab size means for weight and cost.

Slabs are produced in generous sizes that allow long worktop runs, wide islands and continuous splashbacks with fewer joins than smaller materials. Slab size affects far more than appearance. It determines how many slabs your kitchen needs, where joins must fall, how veining can be matched across pieces and how much material is left over. A well planned layout can make a real difference to both the finished look and the final price.

How Slab Sizes Translate to a Kitchen
A standard UK worktop is around 600mm deep, although depths of 620mm to 650mm are common where appliances or deeper cabinets are used. A slab 1200mm wide can therefore yield two standard depth worktop pieces side by side, while wider slabs may yield a worktop piece plus an upstand or splashback from the same slab.
Length is where large formats really help. A 3600mm slab can cover a long straight run in a single piece, while a 3200mm slab suits most typical runs. Very long walls or L shaped layouts will still need joins. Large formats simply keep the number to a minimum.

Planning Islands With Large Slabs
Large islands are where Neolith’s big formats shine. A 3200 x 1600mm slab can create a generous island top without a join, which gives a clean, high end look. Waterfall ends, where the worktop continues down the sides of the island, need extra material, so planning how pieces are cut from each slab is important.
Overhangs for seating require careful planning too. Neolith’s countertop technical manual sets out maximum unsupported overhangs that depend on thickness and whether there is a cut out nearby. Your fabricator will advise on supports where needed.

Joins and Vein Matching
Where joins are unavoidable, their position has a big effect on the finished look. Joins are best placed away from sinks and hobs and in positions that are fully supported. Neolith’s manual recommends a micro bevel on joints and additional support beneath each one.
With veined designs, the layout of pieces on the slab matters. A skilled fabricator will plan cuts so that veining flows naturally across joins and around corners. Some designs can be bookmatched, where adjacent pieces mirror each other for a dramatic effect.
Large Neolith slabs mean fewer joins. Good planning is still essential. Precise templating and careful layout decide where joins fall and how beautifully the pattern flows.
Weight and Handling
Large slabs are heavy and must be handled with care. Neolith’s technical manual gives approximate weights of 29 kg per square metre for 12mm and 48 kg per square metre for 20mm. A full 3200 x 1600mm slab in 20mm therefore weighs well over 200kg, which is why specialist lifting equipment and experienced teams are essential.

Access to your home also matters. Long pieces need a clear route from the van to the kitchen, including doorways, hallways and turns. Your installer will consider this during templating and may plan joins to make delivery practical.
Making the Most of Every Slab
Because Neolith is sold by the slab, efficient planning reduces waste and cost. Offcuts can often be used for upstands, window sills, splashbacks, shelves or bathroom pieces. Discussing these extras at the design stage allows your fabricator to plan them into the cutting layout.

Choosing a design with a subtle or random pattern can sometimes reduce the number of slabs needed, because pieces do not have to be cut in a particular direction to keep veining consistent. Bold, directional veining may require more material to achieve a perfect match.
