Can Ceramic Tiles Be Laid on Wooden Floors?
One of the most common questions from Bedford homeowners considering a new tiled floor is whether they can tile directly onto their existing wooden subfloor. The answer depends on the floor’s stiffness, its condition and the correct preparation method.
Ceramic tiles can be laid on wooden floors, but the floor must first be assessed and prepared correctly. Timber subfloors flex. Ceramic tiles do not. That fundamental incompatibility is what causes tiles to crack and adhesive to fail when the installation specification is wrong. Get the substrate right and a tiled wooden floor will perform as well as any solid subfloor installation.
Why Deflection Is the Critical Factor
When you walk across a timber floor, the joists deflect slightly under load. This is normal and expected. The problem for tile installations is that ceramic tiles are rigid and brittle. If the floor beneath them flexes beyond a certain threshold, the tiles will crack along grout lines or through the tile body itself, and the adhesive bond will eventually fail.
The industry standard for the maximum allowable deflection of a floor that is to be tiled is L/360, where L is the span of the joist in millimetres. For a joist spanning 2,400mm between supports, the maximum allowable deflection at mid-span under live load is 6.7mm. Most domestic timber floors built before the 1980s exceed this deflection limit unless they are stiffened and overlaid.
The L/360 deflection limit is not a guideline. It is the threshold below which ceramic tile adhesive bonds and grout joints remain intact. Exceeding it is the single most common cause of failed tile installations on timber subfloors.
Assessing Your Existing Wooden Floor
Before any preparation work begins, the existing floor should be assessed for the following conditions.
Joists at 300mm centres or less provide the stiffness needed for tiling. Older floors with joists at 400mm or 450mm centres are likely to deflect too much and may need additional support or stiffening.
Floorboards or sheets must be dry, flat and firmly fixed. Any movement between boards is unacceptable. Squeaking boards should be screwed down, not just nailed, before overlay work begins.
Timber floor moisture content should be below 12% before tiling. High moisture causes timber to swell and move, which will crack tiles and debond adhesive regardless of how well the floor is prepared otherwise.
Chipboard floating floors are not suitable for tiling without full removal and replacement with a fixed plywood overlay. Chipboard swells with moisture and lacks the rigidity and screw-holding capacity needed.
The Plywood Overlay Method
The most widely used and reliable method for preparing a timber subfloor for ceramic tiles is to overlay the existing boards with a layer of plywood. This stiffens the floor, eliminates differential movement between boards and provides a consistent, flat surface for tiling.
The plywood must be a minimum of 18mm thick and should be an exterior-grade or WBP (weather and boil proof) bonded ply. Interior grade plywood is not appropriate because it can delaminate if exposed to moisture from tile adhesive or grout during installation or from occasional water ingress thereafter.
The sheets are screwed to the existing floor at 150mm centres across the sheet and 100mm centres around the edges. Screw heads must be countersunk flush. Joints between sheets should be staggered and not coincide with joints in the boards below. A 3mm gap should be left between sheets to allow for movement, and this gap should be filled with adhesive rather than left open.

Choosing the Right Adhesive
Standard grey wall and floor tile adhesive is not suitable for timber subfloor installations. The adhesive must be flexible enough to accommodate the residual movement that will occur in even a well-prepared timber floor. The minimum specification is a C2S1 flexible adhesive to BS EN 12004. For larger format tiles or floors where more movement is anticipated, a C2S2 highly flexible adhesive provides additional insurance.
The adhesive must be applied using a notched trowel with a suitable notch size for the tile format. Full bed coverage is particularly important on timber subfloors. Hollow spots beneath tiles reduce bond strength and concentrate stress at those points when the floor flexes.

Tile Size Recommendations for Wooden Subfloors
Smaller format tiles are generally more forgiving on timber subfloors than large format tiles. A 300mm by 300mm or 400mm by 400mm ceramic tile will bridge small irregularities and cope better with residual movement than a 600mm by 600mm or 600mm by 1200mm format. If large format tiles are specifically required, the subfloor preparation must be especially thorough and a C2S2 adhesive is essential.

On timber subfloor installations, movement joints are not optional. A perimeter movement joint must be installed around the entire tiled area where it meets walls, door frames and any fixed fittings. This joint should be a minimum of 6mm wide and filled with a flexible sealant in a matching colour rather than grouted. Internal movement joints dividing the tiled area into bays of no more than 4.5m should also be specified, particularly in larger rooms.
Failure to include movement joints is one of the most common reasons that otherwise well-specified installations develop grout cracking and tile lifting over the first year of use.
When Tiling on Timber Is Not Advisable
There are circumstances where the best advice is not to tile over a timber subfloor at all. If the joists are in poor condition, if the floor has significant long-term movement due to building settlement, or if the floor level cannot accommodate the additional height of the plywood overlay plus tile without creating a significant step at door thresholds, removal of the timber floor and installation of a concrete or screed base may be the more practical solution.
