Are Ceramic Tiles Suitable for Showers?
Ceramic tiles are one of the most widely used finishes for shower enclosures and wet rooms in the UK. They perform reliably in continuously wet conditions when the substrate is properly waterproofed, the right tile is chosen and a quality grout system is used throughout.
Shower enclosures and wet rooms place the most demanding waterproofing requirements on any tiling installation in a domestic property. The tile surface itself is exposed to direct water flow for prolonged periods every day, and the substrate behind the tiles must be protected from moisture that passes through grout joints. Get the specification right and a ceramic tiled shower can last for thirty years or more without failure. Get it wrong and the first signs of tile debonding or substrate damp can appear within a few years.

Waterproofing the Substrate
The single most important factor in a long-lasting shower or wet room tiling installation is the waterproofing system applied to the substrate before any tiles are fixed. Water inevitably passes through grout joints over time, particularly in a shower that is used daily. Without a waterproof barrier behind the tiles, this water migrates into the wall or floor structure, causes the screed or plasterboard to deteriorate and eventually leads to tile debonding, structural damp and in severe cases damage to the building fabric behind the tiled surface.
Tanking with Liquid-Applied Membrane
The most widely used method for waterproofing shower walls and wet room floors in the UK is tanking with a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane. Products such as BAL Waterproof Plus, Mapei Mapelastic and similar systems are brushed or rolled onto the substrate in two coats, with a reinforcing fabric pressed into the first coat at corners and changes of plane. Once cured, the membrane forms a continuous waterproof layer that tiles are then bonded directly onto. This system works on plasterboard, cement board, concrete block and sand-cement screed substrates.
Cement Board Substrates
For new shower installations, building with a cement board (also called tile backer board) rather than standard plasterboard gives a far better base for tiling. Cement board is dimensionally stable, does not swell or degrade when wet and provides an excellent bond for tile adhesives. Combined with a liquid tanking membrane, a cement board substrate is the highest quality foundation for a ceramic tiled shower or wet room.

Choosing Ceramic Tiles for Shower Walls
Shower walls do not carry load, so the structural strength of the tile is less critical than for floor applications. The key properties for a shower wall tile are a non-porous glazed surface that resists water penetration through the tile face, good bond to the substrate when fixed with the correct adhesive and a size and format that suits the space and aesthetic direction of the project.
Large format tiles on shower walls reduce the number of grout joints and therefore the number of potential water ingress points. A 600x300mm or 600x600mm tile on shower walls produces a clean, contemporary look with minimal grout lines. Smaller format tiles such as 200x100mm brick bonds or 150x150mm squares are also popular and work well with correctly applied waterproofing behind them. The tile format is largely an aesthetic decision for shower walls: the waterproofing system does the structural work regardless of tile size.
Ceramic Tiles for Shower Floors
Shower floor tiles face requirements that wall tiles do not. The floor must provide safe slip resistance when continuously wet and must be able to accommodate the falls (gradients) built into the screed that direct water toward the drain. These two requirements shape the tile specification for a shower floor more than any aesthetic consideration.
Slip Resistance for Shower Floors
R12 is the recommended minimum slip rating for a domestic shower floor tile. In a walk-in shower or wet room where the floor is permanently wet and the user is barefoot, R11 is too marginal, particularly for older or less mobile occupants. R12 tiles have a surface texture that provides secure grip underfoot even when the floor is fully saturated. The Pendulum Test Value (PTV) for a shower floor tile should be 36 or above in wet conditions to meet the low slip risk threshold used by the UK HSE.
Mosaic Tiles for Shower Floors
Mosaic tiles (typically 50x50mm or smaller, mounted on mesh backing sheets) are one of the most practical choices for shower floor surfaces. Their small individual tile size means that the mesh-mounted sheet can be cut and shaped to accommodate the falls in the screed without creating unsightly lippage, and the high density of grout joints across the floor surface delivers excellent mechanical grip underfoot. A mosaic tile floor with R10 rated tiles can outperform a large-format R11 tile on grip because of the grout joint density.
600x300mm or 600x600mm tiles on shower walls minimise grout lines, look modern and are straightforward to clean. Choose a glazed ceramic with waterproof adhesive and epoxy grout.
150x150mm or 200x100mm formats suit traditional or feature wall applications. More grout lines require epoxy grout to prevent discolouration in the steam-heavy shower environment.
The most versatile shower floor option. Mesh-backed sheets follow screed falls easily. Dense grout network provides outstanding grip. R10 mosaic outperforms many R11 large format tiles on feel.
For walk-in shower floors using larger format tiles, R12 rated textured ceramics provide the grip required for a continuously wet surface. Requires accurate screed falls toward the drain.
A full wet room where water covers the entire floor area demands R12 as a minimum, with R13 for larger or commercially influenced installations. Falls must be a minimum of 1:80 to drain.
The rear wall of a shower enclosure behind the showerhead is an opportunity for a feature tile. Ensure it carries the same waterproofing behind it as the side walls and use epoxy grout throughout.
Adhesive and Grout for Shower Tiles
Standard tile adhesives and cementitious grouts are not adequate for shower use. The adhesive must be waterproof, flexible and rated for immersion. A C2S1 or C2S2 polymer-modified adhesive is the correct specification for shower tiles bonded to a tanked substrate. The S1 or S2 designation indicates a degree of flexibility under the EN 12004 standard, which is essential in a wet area where temperature and moisture fluctuation occurs daily.
For grout, epoxy grout is the professional recommendation for all shower applications. Unlike cementitious grout, epoxy grout is non-porous, does not require sealing and is highly resistant to mould, bacteria and the detergents used in daily shower cleaning. It is harder to apply than cementitious grout and costs more, but in a shower environment the performance difference over five to ten years is significant. Joints stay cleaner, resist staining and do not harbour mould in the way that unsealed or even sealed cementitious grout inevitably does over time.

Maintaining a Ceramic Tiled Shower
A correctly installed ceramic shower requires very little maintenance. The tile face itself needs only a wipe with a general bathroom cleaner to remove soap scum and limescale. Avoid abrasive cleaners and scouring pads on glazed ceramic tiles as these can dull the glaze surface over time. A squeegee used on the walls after each shower significantly reduces the build-up of limescale and soap film between cleaning sessions, particularly in hard water areas such as Bedfordshire.
Where cementitious grout has been used rather than epoxy, the grout should be sealed annually with a penetrating grout sealer to maintain its resistance to moisture ingress and mould. The seal can be checked by dropping water onto the grout. If the water beads, the seal is intact. If it soaks in, the grout needs resealing. Any areas of grout that have cracked, crumbled or discoloured badly should be raked out and regrouted rather than sealed over, as the integrity of the joint is the barrier between water and the substrate below.
