A Clear, Honest Answer
Yes, Silestone contains silica, because it is made largely from quartz and quartz is a form of silica. This is completely normal for a quartz surface. The important point for anyone choosing a worktop is that a finished, installed Silestone worktop is safe to use in your home. In everyday use an intact surface does not release any harmful dust, so cooking, cleaning and living with a Silestone worktop carries no silica risk at all. The health topic that is sometimes raised relates to how the material is cut and worked, not to using it in a kitchen.
It is worth understanding this clearly, since headlines about silica can cause needless worry. The concern is an occupational one that affects the people who fabricate the stone, when slabs are cut, ground or polished and fine dust is created. It is managed through proper workplace controls. For you as a homeowner with a fitted worktop, none of that applies in normal daily life. This guide explains the facts plainly so you can make an informed choice with confidence rather than concern.

Where the Silica Question Actually Applies
The single most useful thing to understand is when silica matters and when it does not. A solid, finished worktop is inert and stable, so ordinary use never disturbs it. The fine respirable dust that carries the health risk is only created when the material is actively cut, drilled, ground or removed. That is why the issue is one for fabricators and installers with the right equipment, rather than for families using a fitted surface. The table below makes the distinction clear.
| Situation | Silica Dust Risk |
|---|
| Using a finished worktop at home | None in normal use, the surface is intact and safe |
| Wiping, cooking and cleaning | None, everyday use creates no dust |
| Cutting or polishing a slab | Yes, which is why fabricators use dust controls |
| Removal or demolition | Yes, so this must be done by trained professionals |
Seen this way, the picture is reassuring. The activities that create risk are all professional tasks carried out in a workshop with the proper protection, not things that happen in your kitchen. This is exactly why choosing a responsible, well equipped fabricator matters, since they protect their workers while turning the slab into your worktop. Once that work is done and the surface is fitted, it is a safe, stable part of your home.

The Move to Low Silica HybriQ
The manufacturer has taken the silica question seriously and acted on it. Through its HybriQ technology, Cosentino has developed newer Silestone ranges with a much lower level of crystalline silica than traditional quartz surfaces. Older quartz could contain a very high proportion of crystalline silica, while some modern low silica Silestone ranges bring that down dramatically. This is a genuine change in what the material is made from, driven by a commitment to the health of the people who fabricate it and it reflects wider progress across the whole engineered stone industry in recent years.
Lower SilicaNewer HybriQ ranges cut the crystalline silica well below that of older quartz surfaces.
Worker FocusedThe change is driven by protecting the fabricators who cut and polish the material.
Same PerformanceThe surface stays hard, non porous and beautiful, so your kitchen loses nothing.
To put it plainly, a finished Silestone worktop is safe in your home. Silica only matters during cutting and polishing, which is a job for a properly equipped fabricator and modern HybriQ ranges have lowered the silica content further still.
What This Means for You
For a homeowner, the practical takeaway is simple and positive. You can choose and enjoy a Silestone worktop with full confidence, knowing that the finished surface poses no silica risk in normal use. The one sensible piece of advice is never to attempt to cut, grind or alter the worktop yourself, since any such work should be left to a qualified professional with the correct dust extraction and protection. Beyond that, there is nothing to do differently from any other quality worktop and you can prepare food and go about daily life exactly as you always would.

Choosing a Fabricator You Can Trust
Since the silica question is really about how the stone is worked, one of the most meaningful things a buyer can do is choose a responsible, well equipped fabricator. A good supplier takes worker safety seriously, using wet cutting methods, proper dust extraction and protective equipment so that fine dust is controlled and captured rather than allowed into the air. This protects the skilled people who turn a raw slab into your worktop and it is a mark of a professional operation that cares about doing things properly at every stage.
It is worth feeling comfortable to ask a supplier how they handle fabrication, because a reputable one will be happy to explain. Their answer tells you something about the standards of the whole business, not just their approach to dust. A fabricator who invests in safe working practices tends to be the same one who takes care over templating, cutting and finishing, which is exactly what you want for a flawless result. In this way, choosing a responsible supplier serves both their team and your kitchen.
For you at home, the reassurance is that once this professional work is complete, your worktop is a safe, stable and beautiful part of your kitchen. The only rule to remember is never to cut or alter it yourself. If you ever need changes, an adjustment or a repair, call in a qualified professional who has the right equipment. With that simple principle in mind, you can enjoy your Silestone worktop with complete peace of mind for many years.
