The short answer
Quartz worktops are more expensive than laminate and competitively priced with granite. Budget quartz starts from around £200 per square metre. A full 3-metre kitchen worktop can cost from £1,800 installed. They are not cheap. They are not as expensive as many people assume.
In this guide
“Are quartz worktops expensive?” is one of the first questions we hear from homeowners visiting our Elstow showroom. The answer depends on what you are comparing quartz to and how you define value.
Compared to laminate yes quartz costs more upfront. Compared to granite the pricing is very similar. Compared to the 25+ years of daily use you will get from a quartz worktop with zero maintenance costs the value proposition is compelling.
This guide gives you a transparent breakdown of real UK pricing so you can decide whether quartz fits your budget.
Current UK Quartz Pricing
Quartz pricing varies based on the grade of material you choose. Here is a realistic breakdown based on current market rates.
| Grade | Price/m² (supply) | 3m Kitchen (installed) | What You Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | £200-£350 | £1,800-£3,000 | Solid colours, excellent durability |
| Mid-range | £350-£500 | £3,000-£5,000 | Veined designs, wider colour range |
| Premium | £500-£750+ | £5,000-£8,000+ | Marble-look, branded, dramatic veining |
These figures include the slab material only. A fully installed price will also include templating, fabrication, edge profiling, cut-outs (sink, hob, taps), delivery and fitting. At Precious Marble we provide fully itemised quotes so you can see exactly what each element costs.
What Affects the Price
The headline price per square metre is only part of the picture. Several factors influence the total cost of your project.
- Kitchen layout complexity. An L-shape or U-shape kitchen requires more material and more seam work than a simple straight run. Islands add a separate piece that needs its own templating and fabrication.
- Number of cut-outs. Each sink cut-out, hob cut-out, tap hole and socket cut-out adds fabrication time and cost.
- Edge profile. A standard square or pencil edge is typically included. Premium profiles like ogee, bevelled or waterfall edges cost more because they require additional machining.
- Extras. Upstands, splashbacks, drainer grooves and curved sections all add to the fabrication time and material usage.
- The brand of quartz. Well-known brands like Silestone, Caesarstone and Compac command a premium over unbranded options due to their quality control and warranty coverage.
How Quartz Compares to Other Materials
| Material | Price/m² | Lifespan | Maintenance Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quartz | £200-£750 | 25+ years | £0 |
| Granite | £250-£600 | 25+ years | £20-£30/year (sealing) |
| Marble | £300-£800 | 20+ years | £30-£50/year (sealing) |
| Solid wood | £100-£350 | 15-20 years | Regular oiling |
| Laminate | £30-£100 | 10-15 years | £0 |
The table shows that quartz sits in the middle of the price range for stone worktops. It is significantly more than laminate. It is competitively priced with granite and cheaper than premium marble. The zero maintenance cost over the lifetime of the product is a genuine financial advantage that is easy to overlook.
The Long-Term Value Argument
Price and value are not the same thing. A £3,000 quartz worktop that lasts 25 years costs you £120 per year. A £800 laminate worktop that lasts 12 years costs you £67 per year. The yearly cost difference is £53 for a surface that is dramatically more durable, more hygienic and more visually appealing.

£0
Maintenance costs over the full lifespan

Replacements needed over 25 years
There is also the property value factor. Estate agents across Bedfordshire report that kitchens with stone worktops sell faster and at higher prices than those with laminate. If you are planning to sell your home at any point the investment in quartz delivers a tangible return.
How to Keep Costs Down
If quartz appeals to you and your budget is tight there are several practical ways to bring the cost down without compromising on quality.
- Choose a solid colour. Budget quartz in plain white, grey or black is significantly cheaper than veined designs. The durability and performance are identical.
- Keep the layout simple. Straight runs cost less to fabricate than L-shapes or U-shapes. Fewer cut-outs and standard edge profiles reduce the fabrication time.
- Choose 20mm thickness. A 20mm slab is lighter and uses less material than 30mm. A mitre-joined edge can give the appearance of a thicker worktop at a lower cost.
- Skip the extras. Upstands and splashbacks are nice to have. Tiled splashbacks or painted walls are a cheaper alternative that still look great.
- Get multiple quotes. Always compare at least three itemised quotes. Make sure each covers the same scope so you are comparing like for like.
