How Many Ceramic Tiles Come in a Box?

The number of tiles per box varies by format, thickness and manufacturer. Understanding how boxes are packed and how coverage is calculated helps you order the right quantity and avoid costly shortfalls or unnecessary overspend on your Elstow or Bedford tiling project.

One of the most common questions when planning a tiling project is how many tiles come in a box and how many boxes are needed to cover a given area. The answer depends entirely on the tile format. Manufacturers pack tiles to achieve a box coverage of approximately 1 to 1.5 square metres, adjusting the tile count per box to hit this target regardless of individual tile size.

Why Box Quantity Varies by Format

Tile boxes are packed to a standard coverage area rather than a standard tile count. This approach means that every box you buy covers roughly the same floor or wall area regardless of whether it contains 4 large tiles or 44 small tiles. The logic behind this is practical: a customer calculating coverage needs to know how many square metres a box covers, not how many individual tiles it contains.

The actual tile count per box varies widely. A box of 600mm by 600mm tiles may contain just 4 tiles covering 1.44 square metres. A box of 150mm by 150mm tiles may contain 44 tiles covering the same 0.99 square metres. Both boxes take up roughly the same space on a shelf and cover roughly the same floor area.

Always check the box label for the stated coverage area, not the tile count. The coverage figure is the number you need to calculate how many boxes to order. Tile counts are less useful because they vary significantly between formats.

How to Calculate How Many Boxes You Need

Calculating the number of boxes needed for a project is a straightforward three-step process.

Step 1 Measure the Total Area

Measure the length and width of the room or surface in metres and multiply them together to get the square metreage. For irregular shapes, divide the area into rectangles and add the sections together. Subtract fixed floor obstructions such as built-in units where no tile is needed.

Step 2 Add a Waste Allowance

Add at least 10 percent to the calculated area for a straightforward square-on layout. Add 15 percent for a diagonal or herringbone layout. Add 15 to 20 percent for rooms with many cut-outs, columns or awkward shapes. This covers tile cuts, breakages during installation and future repairs.

Step 3 Divide by Box Coverage

Take the total area including waste allowance and divide by the coverage per box stated on the product packaging. Round up to the next whole number of boxes. Never round down. Running out of tiles mid-project and needing to reorder from a different production batch risks visible colour variation across the finished surface.

Worked Example: Calculating Box Quantity

Consider a kitchen floor measuring 4.2 metres by 3.0 metres, to be tiled with 600mm by 300mm ceramic tiles that cover 1.08 square metres per box.

Total area: 4.2 x 3.0 = 12.6 square metres. Add 10 percent waste: 12.6 x 1.10 = 13.86 square metres. Divide by box coverage: 13.86 divided by 1.08 = 12.8 boxes. Round up to 13 boxes.

Batch Codes and Colour Consistency

Every box of ceramic tiles carries a batch code, sometimes called a lot number or shade number, printed on the box label. Tiles from the same batch code are manufactured in the same production run and will match in colour, texture and calibre (the slight size variation that occurs between batches due to kiln temperature differences).

When ordering, always ensure all boxes are from the same batch code. If you need to order additional tiles later, the batch code may no longer be available and a new batch may have a visible colour difference. This is why ordering enough tiles plus a generous waste allowance from the outset is essential.

Wall Tile Box Coverage

Wall tile boxes follow the same principle as floor tile boxes but coverage per box tends to be smaller. Metro tiles at 75mm by 150mm are commonly packed with 44 to 48 tiles per box, covering approximately 0.5 square metres. This means a typical bathroom wall of 15 square metres requires around 30 boxes of metro tiles before waste. Always check the specific product page or box label as metro tile packaging varies between suppliers.

What to Do With Leftover Tiles

It is good practice to keep a small number of leftover tiles from every project stored safely at home. Ceramic tiles can crack or chip years after installation, and a replacement tile from a different batch may not match exactly. Having two or three spare tiles set aside means a future repair can be made invisibly with a matching tile from the original batch.
