Are Ceramic Tiles Slippery When Wet?

Ceramic tiles can absolutely be slippery when wet, but that is not the whole story. Slip resistance is a measurable property, and every tile sold in the UK should carry a rating that tells you how much grip it provides underfoot. The issue is that many homeowners buy tiles purely on looks without checking whether the surface is appropriate for the room it is going into.

A polished or high-gloss ceramic tile looks stunning in a showroom. Install it on a bathroom floor or a kitchen floor and you have a very different experience when water gets involved. This guide explains the rating systems used in the UK, which surfaces need the most grip, and how to make a safe choice without sacrificing style.

How Slip Resistance Is Measured

There are two main systems used to rate tile slip resistance in the UK and Europe. Both measure slightly different things, and the best specifications reference both.

The R-Rating System (DIN 51130)

Developed in Germany and widely adopted across Europe, the R-rating is measured by a technician wearing safety shoes walking across an oil-contaminated tile on a ramp set at an increasingly steep angle. The steeper the angle before the wearer slips, the higher the R-rating. Ratings run from R9 through to R13. The scale applies to areas where people wear shoes or are likely to walk on a surface with some form of contamination.

The Pendulum Test Value (PTV)

The pendulum test uses a pivoting arm with a rubber slider that mimics a person’s heel striking a floor. It measures the friction between the slider and the tile surface in both wet and dry conditions. The Health and Safety Executive in the UK uses Pendulum Test Values as the primary measure for evaluating slip risk. A PTV of 36 or above is considered low slip risk. Values between 25 and 35 are moderate risk, and anything below 25 is high slip risk territory.

Which Rooms Need the Most Slip Resistance?

Not every room in a home carries the same slip risk. The correct rating for a living room floor is very different from what is appropriate in a walk-in shower tray.

Low risk environments where floors stay dry. R9 ceramic tiles are appropriate here, though R10 gives better peace of mind near entrance doors where outdoor moisture can be tracked in.

Does Tile Size Affect Slip Resistance?

Tile size has a direct impact on the grip a floor delivers, and it is often overlooked when people focus purely on the tile surface rating. The more grout lines a floor contains, the more mechanical grip it provides. A mosaic tile floor can have five times the grout line coverage of a large-format tile floor using the same base tile material.

This is why mosaic ceramic tiles are so commonly specified for walk-in shower trays and pool surrounds. A 10x10mm mosaic tile creates an almost continuous network of grout joints that interlock with the sole of the foot, providing excellent grip even when the tile surface itself is only rated at R10. Larger format tiles, anything from 60x60cm upward, concentrate all the friction on the tile face itself, making the surface rating of the tile far more critical.

Glazed Versus Unglazed Ceramic Tiles

The glaze applied to a ceramic tile significantly affects its slip resistance. A high-gloss glaze produces a smooth, reflective surface that can become extremely slippery when wet. Matt and satin-finish glazes offer substantially better slip resistance. The surface texture interrupts the water film that forms on a wet tile and allows the foot to make better contact with the tile face.

Unglazed ceramic tiles, such as terracotta and quarry tiles, are generally highly slip resistant because the raw clay body of the tile has a naturally granular texture. However, unglazed tiles are porous and do require sealing to prevent staining and water absorption, which is a separate maintenance consideration.

Tips for Reducing Slip Risk on Existing Ceramic Tiles

If you already have ceramic tiles fitted in a bathroom or kitchen and you are concerned about slip risk, anti-slip treatments are available as liquids that are applied to the tile surface and etch a microscopic texture into the glaze, increasing grip without visibly altering the appearance of the tile. Bath mats and non-slip mats placed at the exit points from the shower or bath provide targeted grip where it is needed most.

Improving drainage so that water clears from the floor more quickly also reduces slip risk. Wet room drains positioned at the lowest point of the floor, correct falls built into the screed during installation, and grout joints that do not trap standing water all contribute to a floor that dries faster and is therefore safer underfoot.
