After 5 Years: What to Expect

At the five-year mark a well-maintained quartz worktop should look virtually identical to the day it was installed. The colour will not have faded. The surface will not have dulled. There should be no staining or visible wear patterns.

A laminate worktop at five years may show edge swelling near the sink, surface scratches from daily use and possibly burn marks. The most common observation is that the area around the sink may show very faint wear patterns if the homeowner has consistently used abrasive cleaning products. This is entirely preventable by using mild detergent as recommended.

Worktops positioned near south-facing windows may show the earliest signs of very slight colour shift from UV exposure. This happens gradually and is more noticeable on darker colours. It is not a defect. It is a characteristic of the resin pigments used in all quartz products.

After 20 Years: Long-Term Performance

At the 20-year mark you are approaching the point where most homeowners are thinking about a kitchen refresh for design reasons rather than because the worktop has failed. The quartz itself will still be structurally sound and functionally performing.

What you may notice at this stage is subtle. The polish on high-traffic areas (directly in front of the sink and the main preparation zone) may have lost a fraction of its original sheen. Very light surface scratches from 20 years of daily cutting board placement and appliance movement may be visible under certain lighting. Colour may have shifted marginally in areas exposed to direct sunlight for two decades.

None of these changes affect the function of the worktop. It will still be non-porous, stain-resistant and hygienic. The seams will still be intact. The edge profiles will still be crisp. The worktop will still be doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Compare that to the alternatives. A laminate worktop rarely survives beyond 15 years. A solid wood worktop at 20 years will have required multiple rounds of sanding and re-oiling. A granite worktop may still be performing well if it has been resealed every year without fail.
