Installation day is the moment everything comes together. After weeks of choosing your slab, templating and fabrication you finally get to see your new quartz worktop in place. For most Bedford homeowners this is the first time they have had a professional worktop fitted and the process can feel unfamiliar.

This guide walks you through exactly what happens step by step. Knowing what to expect removes the uncertainty and helps you prepare your kitchen so the installation goes smoothly.

What Happens Before Installation Day

Installation day does not happen in isolation. There are two critical stages that take place first and both need to be completed properly for the installation to go well.

How to Prepare Your Kitchen

A little preparation the evening before makes a significant difference to how smoothly the day goes. Here is what we recommend.

• Clear everything off the worktop surfaces. Kettles, toasters, knife blocks, fruit bowls and anything stored on the worktop needs to be moved.
• Empty the cupboards directly below the worktop. The fitters may need to work underneath to secure supports and brackets.
• Disconnect the sink and hob if possible. Your plumber or kitchen fitter should do this in advance. If you cannot arrange this let us know and we can advise.
• Ensure clear access from your front door to the kitchen. Quartz slabs are heavy and the team will need an unobstructed path to carry them through.
• Protect your flooring. Our team uses dust sheets. If you have particularly delicate flooring it is worth mentioning this in advance.

When the Team Arrives

Our fitting team typically arrives between 8am and 9am. They will introduce themselves, walk through the plan for the day and lay down protective sheeting along the route from the door to the kitchen.

The quartz slabs will be unloaded carefully from the van. A standard 3-metre run of 30mm quartz weighs approximately 100kg so this is always a two-person job with specialist carrying equipment. The team will position the slabs close to the kitchen ready for fitting.

Removing the Old Worktop

If your old worktop is being replaced the team will remove it first. Laminate worktops are usually screwed or glued to the cabinets and can be lifted out in sections. Existing stone worktops are heavier and take a little longer to remove. The old material is set aside for disposal.

Once the old worktop is off the team will check that the cabinet tops are level and structurally sound. Any adjustments needed to ensure a flat and even base for the new quartz are made at this stage. This is a critical step. An uneven base can cause stress points that lead to problems later.

Fitting the New Quartz Worktop

This is the main event. The team will carefully lift each section of quartz into position on the cabinets. They work methodically starting with the longest run and then fitting any shorter sections, returns or island pieces.

Each piece is checked for level and adjusted until the fit is perfect. If your kitchen has multiple sections the seams are joined using colour-matched adhesive that is pressed together under pressure. A skilled fitter can make seams virtually invisible once the adhesive has set.

The worktop is then secured to the cabinets using brackets and adhesive. The sink and hob cut-outs are checked for alignment and the sink is dry-fitted to confirm positioning before the final fixing.

Finishing Touches and Sealant

Once the worktop is securely in place the team moves on to the finishing details. The undermount or inset sink is fitted and bonded. Silicone sealant is applied along the wall junction where the worktop meets the splashback or tiles. The sealant is also applied around the sink perimeter to create a watertight seal.

If upstands are included in your order they are fitted at this stage. Upstands are narrow strips of matching quartz that sit vertically against the wall behind the worktop creating a clean seamless finish.

The team will then clean the entire worktop surface, remove all packaging and dust and do a final inspection. They will walk you through the finished installation and point out any details you should be aware of.

Aftercare in the First 24 Hours

The worktop surface itself is ready to use immediately. There is one important exception. The silicone sealant around the sink, wall junctions and any seams needs 24 hours to cure fully. During this period:

• Do not run water around the sink area until the sealant has cured. This prevents water from getting underneath the seal before it has fully bonded.
• Avoid placing heavy objects on the worktop for the first few hours. Allow the adhesive securing the worktop to the cabinets to set properly.
• Do not use the hob until it has been reconnected by a qualified gas engineer or electrician. The fitters position the hob. They do not reconnect utilities.
• Keep cleaning products away from the sealant for the first 48 hours. Once cured the silicone is fully waterproof and durable.
