In this guide
Buying a quartz worktop is a significant investment. For most Bedford homeowners it is a decision they will only make once or twice in their lifetime. The right worktop will serve you beautifully for 25 years or more. The wrong one will be a daily source of frustration.
The difference between a great outcome and a disappointing one almost always comes down to the questions you ask before committing. A reputable supplier will welcome these questions. A supplier who cannot answer them clearly is one you should walk away from.
At Precious Marble we answer every one of these questions as standard during our consultation process. We have compiled this list based on more than 15 years of conversations with Bedford homeowners so you know exactly what to ask no matter which supplier you choose.
Why the Right Questions Save You Money
Most of the costly mistakes homeowners make when buying quartz worktops could have been avoided with better information upfront. Vague quotes and unclear timelines are the two biggest sources of budget overruns and disappointment.

The questions in this guide are organised into six categories. Work through them systematically with every supplier you speak to. For a broader overview of what to consider before choosing quartz our guide on what Bedford homeowners should know before buying quartz worktops covers the fundamentals.
Questions About the Material
Question 1
What brand of quartz do you supply?
There are significant quality differences between quartz manufacturers. Established brands like Silestone, Caesarstone, Compac and Technistone invest heavily in resin quality and quality control. Unbranded or white-label quartz from unknown factories may look similar initially. The long-term durability and colour stability can be very different.
What a good answer sounds like
The supplier names specific brands and can explain the differences between them. They can tell you where the quartz is manufactured and what warranty the manufacturer provides.
Red flag
The supplier cannot name the brand or says “we use our own quartz” without further detail.
Question 2
Can I see physical samples of the colour I am interested in?
Colour accuracy on screens is unreliable. The veining pattern and surface texture of quartz cannot be properly judged from a photograph. Viewing a physical sample in your own kitchen under your own lighting is the only way to be confident in your colour choice.
What a good answer sounds like
The supplier offers large samples (A4 or bigger) that you can take home. Even better they have a showroom with full slabs you can view.
Question 3
What thickness options are available and which do you recommend for my kitchen?
Standard quartz comes in 20mm and 30mm. The right choice depends on your kitchen style and your existing cabinetry. A 30mm slab looks more substantial. A 20mm slab is lighter and costs less. Your supplier should help you weigh the pros and cons rather than simply defaulting to one option.
Questions About Costs and Pricing
Question 4
Can you provide a fully itemised quote?
This is the single most important question you can ask. A single-line quote tells you nothing about what is included. You need to see each element broken down separately: slab material, templating, fabrication, edge profiling, cut-outs (sink, hob, tap holes), delivery, installation and waste removal.
What a good answer sounds like
The supplier provides a line-by-line breakdown without hesitation. Every cost is visible and explained.
Red flag
The supplier gives a single total or says “everything is included” without specifying what “everything” covers.
Question 5
Are there any additional costs that might apply?
Ask specifically about extras that are sometimes added after the initial quote. Common additions include drainer grooves, upstands, splashbacks, waterfall edges, additional cut-outs and difficult access charges. A transparent supplier will flag all of these upfront.
Question 6
What is the payment schedule?
Most suppliers require a deposit to secure your order with the balance due before or on the day of installation. Avoid any supplier who asks for full payment upfront before work has started. A typical structure is 30-50% deposit with the balance on completion.
Questions About Fabrication and Quality
Question 7
Do you fabricate in-house or outsource?
A supplier who fabricates in their own workshop has direct control over the quality of every cut, polish and finish. Outsourced fabrication adds a layer of distance between you and the people doing the work.
What a good answer sounds like
The supplier confirms they have their own factory with CNC and waterjet cutting equipment. They can describe their fabrication process and invite you to visit.
Question 8
What edge profile options do you offer?
A good fabricator offers a range of edge profiles from standard square and pencil round to premium options like ogee, bevelled and waterfall. Ask to see physical cross-section samples. The edge runs the full length of every exposed side so it has a bigger visual impact than most people realise.
Questions About Installation
Question 9
How does the templating process work?
Templating is the precision measurement of your kitchen that happens before fabrication. Digital templating using laser measurement tools is the current gold standard. It produces highly accurate measurements and reduces the risk of errors. Ask whether your supplier uses digital or manual templating methods.
Question 10
How long between templating and installation?
A realistic timeline is two to three weeks from templating to installation for a standard kitchen. If a supplier promises a much faster turnaround ask how. Rushing fabrication increases the risk of quality issues.
Question 11
Do your own team install or do you use subcontractors?
In-house fitting teams are accountable to the supplier directly. They know the product and they know the standards expected. Subcontracted fitters may be skilled. The quality control is less direct. Ask this question and factor the answer into your decision.
If you are looking for a supplier who handles every stage in-house from design through to fitting our team at Precious Marble would be happy to help. We manage the entire process from our Elstow workshop and offer a complete service for quartz worktops in Bedford and across Bedfordshire.
Questions About Aftercare and Warranty
Question 12
What warranty do you provide?
Ask about both the manufacturer’s warranty on the quartz material and the supplier’s warranty on the fabrication and installation work. Most reputable quartz brands offer a 10 to 25 year manufacturer warranty. The supplier should also guarantee their workmanship for a reasonable period.
Question 13
What cleaning products should I use on quartz?
Quartz is low-maintenance. You should still know the basics before your worktop goes in. Warm water and a mild detergent are all you need for daily cleaning. Avoid bleach, abrasive cleaners and scouring pads. A good supplier will provide written aftercare instructions with your installation.
Top tip
Write these questions down before your consultation. A supplier who takes the time to answer every one thoroughly is showing you how they will handle your project from start to finish.
Questions About the Supplier
Question 14
How long have you been in business?
Experience matters in stone fabrication. An established supplier with years of trading history has dealt with every type of kitchen layout and every kind of challenge. Ask how long they have been operating and how many installations they complete each year.
Question 15
Can I see examples of your previous work?
Photographs of completed kitchens give you a clear picture of the supplier’s craftsmanship. A portfolio of real installations is far more valuable than stock images. Ask if they have before and after photos or customer testimonials you can review.
Knowing what to ask is just one part of the buying process. For a complete picture of what to expect from choosing your quartz through to the day it is installed our Bedford Homeowner Guide covers every step in detail.
