How Is Neolith Made and Where Does It Come From?

Every Neolith slab is pressed, decorated and fired in Spain using natural minerals and no resin. Here is how the process works and what it means for the worktop in your kitchen.

From Raw Minerals to Finished Slab

Neolith starts as a pile of finely ground natural minerals and ends as one of the toughest surfaces you can put in a kitchen. What happens in between is a carefully controlled industrial process that recreates, in a few hours, the heat and pressure that form rock deep beneath the earth over thousands of years. Understanding that process explains why Neolith behaves so differently from quartz, laminate or even natural stone.

Every slab is produced by TheSize Surfaces at its factory in the province of Castellón in eastern Spain, a region with a long heritage in ceramics. The company has refined its method since it was founded in 2009 and now combines traditional ceramic know how with some of the most advanced pressing, firing and decoration technology in the industry.

This guide walks through each stage in order, from sourcing the raw materials to the final quality checks, so you know exactly what you are paying for when you choose a Neolith worktop for your home.

Where the Raw Materials Come From

The recipe is built from natural raw materials only. Clays give the mix workability, feldspars melt during firing to fuse everything together, quartz and silica minerals add hardness and natural oxides provide colour. Industry reports note that TheSize sources minerals from several continents, including South Africa, Brazil and Angola, then blends them to tightly controlled specifications. Some colours also include a high share of recycled material, reaching up to 98% on certain designs.

Consistency starts here. Each batch of raw material is tested before it enters production, because small variations in mineral content would show up later as differences in colour, strength or flatness. This careful selection is one reason a Neolith slab bought today should match a slab from the same design bought next year far more closely than two blocks of quarried marble ever could.

The Five Main Stages of Production

Although the full process involves many controlled steps, it can be understood as five main stages. The table below sets out what happens at each one and why it matters for the worktop that eventually arrives in your kitchen.

Pressing: Building Strength From the Inside

Once the minerals are mixed, the powder is fed into giant presses. Neolith states that the material is compacted with a force of up to 400 bars. This squeezes out air and forces the particles into intimate contact with each other, creating a solid raw slab with very few voids. The fewer the voids at this stage, the lower the porosity of the finished product.

The raw slab is then dried to remove residual moisture. This step is gentle and controlled because trapped water would turn to steam inside the kiln and weaken the material. Drying also gives the slab enough strength to be handled and decorated before it is fired.

Decoration: How the Pattern Gets There

The look of a Neolith slab is created with advanced digital decoration. The company uses a water based system it calls HYDRO-NDD 2.0, which applies detailed patterns with far lower emissions than older printing methods. This is how designs such as Calacatta, Estatuario and industrial concrete effects achieve their natural appearance.

On selected designs, Full Body technology adds colour and pattern through the whole thickness of the slab rather than only on the face. Neolith also developed Full Body Veining over seven years of research, allowing veins to run through thicker slabs so that edges, mitres and sink cut outs look authentic. For kitchens with exposed edges or waterfall islands, this makes a noticeable difference.

Sintering: The Heart of the Process

The decorated slab now enters the kiln, where it is fired at more than 1,200°C. At this temperature the feldspars partially melt and flow between the other particles, then cool into a glassy matrix that binds everything together. This is sintering. The minerals fuse without the need for any resin, glue or plastic, which is why the finished surface is unaffected by hot pans, sunlight or household chemicals.

Because the slab has already been exposed to temperatures far higher than any kitchen will ever reach, everyday heat simply cannot change it. This is the fundamental reason Neolith outperforms quartz, whose resin binder begins to soften and discolour at much lower temperatures.

Think of Neolith as stone that has already been through the fire. Having been pressed at up to 400 bars and baked beyond 1,200°C, there is very little a busy family kitchen can do to change it.

Finishing, Checking and Sustainability

After firing, slabs are finished to give their final texture. Neolith’s NAP technology sprays the surface as it leaves the kiln to create the soft touch Silk finish, while other slabs are polished for a high gloss look or given textured finishes such as Riverwashed. Edges are then rectified so every slab is square and accurate to size.

Quality Control

Slabs are inspected for flatness, colour, dimensions and surface defects before they are graded and packed.

Energy and Water

Production runs on renewable electricity and water used in manufacture is recycled within the plant.

Waste Reduction

Most industrial waste is reused and finished slabs are 100% recyclable at the end of their life.

In 2024 the company also launched silica free formulations, beginning with Arctic White and Abu Dhabi White in 20mm. This reflects a wider shift in the stone industry towards safer materials for the fabricators who cut and shape worktops.

From Factory Slab to Your Kitchen

A finished slab is only half the story. Sintered stone is extremely hard, so it must be cut with specialist equipment such as CNC machines and waterjets, with careful handling at every stage. Poor cutting can cause chips or stress cracks, which is why the skill of your fabricator matters as much as the quality of the slab.
