Do Ceramic Tiles Contain Silica and Is That a Concern?
Yes, ceramic tiles contain crystalline silica as a core ingredient. Cutting, grinding or drilling tiles produces fine dust that is dangerous to inhale. Understanding the risk and the controls required under UK law is essential for anyone working with ceramic tiles.
Ceramic tiles are made primarily from clay, feldspar and silica. Silica in its crystalline form, most commonly as quartz, accounts for between 15 and 30 percent of the raw material content of a typical ceramic tile. This silica is chemically locked into the structure of the fired tile body and presents no hazard whatsoever during normal use. You can walk on ceramic tiles, clean them and live around them your entire life without any silica-related health risk.
The hazard arises when ceramic tiles are cut, ground, drilled or sanded. These processes break apart the fired tile body and release tiny particles of crystalline silica into the air. Particles small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs are known as respirable crystalline silica (RCS). Once lodged in lung tissue, RCS causes permanent scarring that can progress to a serious and potentially fatal lung disease called silicosis.
What Is Silicosis?
Silicosis is an irreversible and incurable lung disease caused by the inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust over time. The silica particles trigger an inflammatory response in the lung tissue, causing progressive fibrosis (scarring) that gradually reduces lung capacity. In advanced cases it becomes difficult to breathe even at rest.
Silicosis typically has a latency period of ten years or more between first exposure and the appearance of symptoms, which is what makes it particularly dangerous. A person can be exposed to silica dust regularly over a working career without feeling any immediate effects, only to develop a serious respiratory condition decades later. There is no treatment that reverses silicosis once it develops. Prevention through dust control is the only effective approach.

How Much Silica Do Ceramic Tiles Contain?
The silica content of ceramic tiles varies by tile type and manufacturer, but as a general guide ceramic wall tiles typically contain between 15 and 25 percent crystalline silica, floor tiles are in a similar range, and porcelain tiles, which are fired at higher temperatures and have a more vitrified body, can contain higher proportions of quartz in their raw material mix. The silica content of a specific tile can be found in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which manufacturers are required to provide and which reputable tile suppliers should be able to furnish on request.
When Is Silica Dust Generated?
Silica dust from ceramic tiles is only generated when the tile surface or body is mechanically disturbed. Ordinary handling and installation of whole tiles produces no meaningful dust. The risk arises specifically during the following activities.
Using an angle grinder without water suppression on ceramic or porcelain tiles generates very high concentrations of RCS in a very short time. This is the highest-risk activity associated with tile work and must be avoided or replaced with wet methods.
A dry-cut tile saw or angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade generates fine silica dust with every cut. Wet-cutting equivalents are available and should always be used in preference.
Drilling ceramic tiles for fixing points creates localised silica dust. Using a diamond-tipped drill bit with water cooling significantly reduces the dust generated. Working outdoors or with local exhaust ventilation reduces exposure further.
Breaking up old ceramic tile floors for removal produces silica dust. This should be done wet where possible, with workers wearing appropriate respiratory protection.
A wet-cut tile saw with a continuous water feed suppresses most of the dust at source. This is the preferred cutting method for reducing silica exposure, though respiratory protection is still recommended for prolonged cutting work.
Manual tile cutters that score and snap tiles produce very little dust compared to powered cutting. For straight cuts on wall tiles this method is preferable from a dust control standpoint.
UK Legal Requirements for Silica Dust Control
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) require employers and self-employed contractors to assess and control exposure to hazardous substances, including silica dust. The Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) for respirable crystalline silica in the UK is 0.1 mg/m3 measured as an eight-hour time-weighted average. This limit must not be exceeded, and employers must apply a hierarchy of controls to reduce exposure as far below this limit as reasonably practicable.
The HSE expects tiling contractors to use wet cutting methods wherever possible, provide on-tool water suppression or local exhaust ventilation (LEV) for tasks where wet cutting is not practical, and supply appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) as a supplementary control rather than a primary one. RPE alone is not considered adequate where engineering controls could reasonably be applied.
Respiratory Protection Standards
Where RPE is required for silica dust work, the HSE recommends a minimum of an FFP3 disposable mask or a half-face respirator fitted with a P3 filter. Lower-rated dust masks such as FFP1 and FFP2 do not provide adequate protection against RCS at the concentrations generated by powered tile cutting. The mask must be correctly fitted and face-fit tested for the wearer. A beard prevents a proper seal and reduces the effectiveness of any tight-fitting respirator significantly.
Is Silica in Ceramic Tiles a Concern for Homeowners?
For homeowners living in a tiled property the answer is no. The crystalline silica in a fitted ceramic tile presents no health risk. It is chemically stable, bound into the tile matrix and not available for inhalation under any normal domestic activity including cleaning, mopping or general wear.
The concern arises for DIY tilers who cut tiles at home, often using dry-cutting tools without dust suppression. A homeowner cutting fifty tiles for a bathroom wall using a dry angle grinder in an enclosed space is exposing themselves to potentially very high concentrations of RCS. The health risk is the same as for a professional tiler. For any significant tile cutting work, use a wet-cut tile saw, work outdoors where possible and wear an appropriate FFP3-rated mask throughout the cutting process.
