Are Ceramic Tiles a Good Choice for Bathrooms?

Ceramic tiles have been the default choice for UK bathrooms for generations, and the reasons are practical rather than purely aesthetic. A bathroom is one of the most demanding environments in any home. Surfaces face daily exposure to water, steam, humidity and temperature fluctuation. Very few materials handle this combination as reliably as a ceramic tile, and even fewer do it as affordably over the long term.

Why Ceramic Tiles Work Well in Bathrooms

The core advantage of ceramic tiles in a bathroom is their resistance to moisture. A glazed ceramic tile has a non-porous surface that water cannot penetrate. Steam, condensation and direct water contact from showers and baths all run off the glazed face without being absorbed. This is why ceramic tiles do not harbour mould on their surface in the way that painted plaster or wallpaper can.

Ceramic tiles are also exceptionally easy to clean. The smooth glaze does not trap soap scum, limescale or bacteria in the way that textured or porous surfaces can. A weekly wipe with a mild cleaning solution is typically all that is needed to keep a ceramic tiled bathroom looking fresh. Unlike painted surfaces, the colour and finish of a ceramic tile does not fade, peel or degrade over time regardless of how frequently the room is used.

Ceramic Tiles for Bathroom Walls

Bathroom walls have different requirements from bathroom floors, and the tile specification should reflect this. Wall tiles do not need to carry any load, so structural strength is less relevant than it is for floor tiles. However, wall tiles in a bathroom need to perform reliably under repeated exposure to steam and water, bond securely to the wall substrate and maintain their appearance over years of daily use.

Water Absorption and Wall Tiles

Most ceramic wall tiles fall into Group III of the BS EN 14411 water absorption classification, meaning they absorb more than 10 percent of their weight in water. This is perfectly acceptable for wall tiles because the glazed face prevents water penetration through the tile surface. The absorption rate refers to the tile body, not the face. Provided the tile is correctly installed with the right adhesive, the grout joints are properly sealed and the wall substrate is waterproof in wet zones, a Group III ceramic wall tile performs reliably in a bathroom.

Sizing for Bathroom Walls

The size of wall tiles has a significant effect on the visual character of a bathroom. Large format tiles (600x300mm and above) create a clean, contemporary look with fewer grout joints, which some homeowners prefer for ease of cleaning. Smaller tiles (150x150mm or 200x100mm) can make a compact bathroom feel busier but allow more design flexibility and easier cutting around fittings. For low ceilings, vertical-format tiles (taller than they are wide) can visually increase ceiling height. The choice should be guided by the proportions of the room and the aesthetic direction of the project.

Bathroom floor tiles must meet requirements that wall tiles do not. Strength, slip resistance and the ability to withstand repeated wet-dry cycles underfoot are all essential. A tile rated for wall use only should never be installed on a bathroom floor, as it may not be strong enough to withstand foot traffic and the load of bathroom fittings placed on it.

Slip Resistance for Bathroom Floors

The R-rating system (DIN 51130) and the Pendulum Test Value (PTV) used by the UK HSE are the two standards most relevant to bathroom floor tiles. For a domestic bathroom floor, R11 is the minimum recommended specification. A PTV of 36 or above is considered low slip risk by the HSE. Polished or high-gloss floor tiles should not be used in any bathroom where the floor surface will get wet, as their PTV in wet conditions can fall well below the safe threshold.

Wet Zone Requirements

BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, defines bathroom zones that determine the IP rating required for electrical installations. While this primarily concerns electrics, the same zoning concept is useful for understanding how tiling requirements change within a bathroom. Zone 1 is the area directly within and immediately surrounding the shower enclosure or bath. Zone 2 extends outward from Zone 1 by 0.6 metres. Outside these zones is the general bathroom area.

In Zone 1 and Zone 2, tile adhesive and grout must be fully waterproof and rated for immersion or splash exposure. The substrate behind the tiles in Zone 1 should be a waterproofing membrane or tanked using a suitable liquid-applied system before tiling begins. Skipping this step is one of the most common causes of tile failure and damp penetration in bathrooms, particularly around shower enclosures.

Grout Selection and Maintenance

Grout is the element of a tiled bathroom surface most likely to fail first if not correctly selected and maintained. Standard grey or white sanded grout in a bathroom shower area will absorb moisture over time, darken and provide a foothold for mould if it is not sealed. For bathroom applications, particularly in Zone 1, an epoxy grout provides significantly better water resistance and stain resistance than cementitious grout and does not require sealing. The additional cost of epoxy grout is generally worth it in heavily used shower enclosures.

Where cementitious grout is used, applying a penetrating grout sealer after installation and repeating annually or every two years keeps the grout resistant to moisture ingress and discolouration. Light-coloured grout in shower areas is attractive when new but requires more maintenance to keep clean than mid-tone grey or charcoal grout that is more forgiving of soap scum build-up.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequently seen problems in ceramic bathroom tiling projects come down to a small number of repeated errors. Using wall tiles on bathroom floors is the most common, as wall tiles are not rated for foot traffic and can crack or chip under load. Failing to waterproof the substrate behind shower tiles before tiling allows water to migrate into the wall structure over time, eventually causing tiles to debond and structural damp damage to occur beneath the surface.

Using a high-gloss polished tile on a bathroom floor is a safety risk, as gloss surfaces become extremely slippery when wet. Using standard cementitious grout without sealing it in a shower area leads to rapid discolouration and mould growth. And skimping on adhesive coverage beneath floor tiles allows hollow spots to develop beneath the tile face, which crack under point loads. A tiling contractor should achieve a minimum of 80 percent adhesive contact beneath floor tiles, and 95 percent in wet rooms.
