What makes Dekton worktops special

Dekton is an ultracompact surface, or sintered stone, manufactured by the Spanish company Cosentino. A precise blend of glass, porcelain and quartz minerals is fused under extreme heat and pressure into a single dense slab. The result is a worktop that is non-porous, never needs sealing, and shrugs off the things that damage other surfaces. For the full background, see our guide on what Dekton is and what it is made from.

In day-to-day use, that translates into a surface you do not have to baby. Hot pans, sharp knives, red wine, coffee, citrus and sunlight are all handled with ease. The table below sums up why so many Bedfordshire homeowners choose it for busy family kitchens.

Property What it means for your kitchen
Non-porous No sealing, ever. Spills sit on top and wipe away.
Heat resistant Hot pans straight from the hob will not scorch the surface.
Scratch resistant One of the hardest worktop surfaces available.
Stain resistant Wine, oil, coffee and citrus do not soak in.
UV stable Colour will not fade, so it works outdoors too.
Large format Slabs up to 3.2m mean fewer joints across long runs.

Where Dekton works best

Because Dekton is equally happy indoors and out, it is one of the most versatile surfaces we fit. Popular uses include kitchen worktops and islands, full-height splashbacks, breakfast bars, bathroom vanity tops, and increasingly outdoor kitchens where its frost and ultraviolet resistance really earns its place. The same slab can flow from a worktop down the side of an island as a waterfall edge for a seamless, contemporary look.

Dekton for outdoor living

One of Dekton’s biggest advantages over quartz is that it is completely stable under ultraviolet light, so its colour will not fade in sunlight. That makes it ideal for the fast-growing trend of outdoor kitchens, garden bars and alfresco dining areas. Combined with its frost resistance, a Dekton surface can stay outside all year round in the British climate without deteriorating. If you are planning a garden kitchen, our guide on using Dekton outdoors covers what to consider.

Maintenance made simple

Because Dekton is non-porous, day-to-day care could not be easier. There is no sealing to remember, no special products to buy, and no annual upkeep. For everyday cleaning, warm soapy water or a mild household cleaner and a soft cloth is all you need. Spills can sit without soaking in, so there is no rush to wipe up wine or oil before it stains. For tougher marks, a non-abrasive cream cleaner does the job. Our full guide on how to clean and care for Dekton has the details.

Built to last, and guaranteed

Dekton is engineered to perform for decades, and Cosentino backs it with a 25-year warranty covering manufacturing defects, subject to the usual conditions. For a busy family home, that combination of durability and reassurance is a big part of the appeal. A worktop you fit once and never have to think about again often works out better value than a cheaper surface you replace partway through the life of the kitchen, a point we explore in are Dekton worktops worth it.

Common questions, answered

Can you cut on a Dekton worktop? Dekton is extremely scratch resistant, but we still recommend a board to protect your knives, which will blunt against the hard surface. Can you put hot pans on it? Yes, Dekton handles heat very well, though a trivet is always sensible for any worktop. Does it chip? Dekton is tough, but like any hard surface a sharp impact on an edge can cause damage, which is why edges and corners are detailed carefully during fabrication. See does Dekton chip or scratch for more.
